The City Of Sunderland
Sunderland is an English port city in the county of Tyne and Wear. Situated on the north bank of the River Wear, it’s located 9 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne and 10 miles from Durham. With a population of around 275,000 people, Sunderland has a diverse culture and bustling economy based primarily on its industrial heritage.
Once known as “the largest shipbuilding town in the world,” Sunderland was once home to many major shipbuilders. At its peak, shipbuilding employed over 20,000 workers – but today these traditional industries are no more. In their stead, Sunderland has developed an economy that includes companies in advanced manufacturing, engineering and technology, gaming and digital media sectors.
Tourism is also becoming increasingly important to Sunderland’s local economy. Its long coastline offers plenty of opportunities for visitors to explore its beaches and several natural attractions like Roker & Seaburn Beach and Herington Park. And if you’re a fan of football, then you can’t miss cheering on the local team. Sunderland AFC plays at the Stadium of Light – one of Europe’s leading stadiums which opened in 1997.
These days, Sunderland prides itself on staying well connected with many transport links. By train, it takes around 4 hours from London King’s Cross to reach Sunderland Central Station. Buses operate both nationally and locally throughout the city with frequent routes to neighbouring towns like South Shields) and Hartlepool.
It’s no wonder that so many people choose to live in this vibrant city! Whether it’s participating in exciting activities around town or embracing its historical past – there’s something for everyone here in Sunderland!
